Do you have beautiful daydreams, too?

Yesterday's (August 20, 2006) Doonesbury comic was one of the most beautiful comics I've seen in a long time, even though all the panels were about war-torn regions. One panel showed a scene in Kabul where people were riding on a mule-pulled cart with a boy riding alongside on his bike; a scene in Gaza where people were shopping in the markets; one in southern Lebanon where boys were playing soccer; one in Musul where soldiers were enjoying R&R around a swimming pool, and a scene in Baghdad of mosques and birds chirping. Then comes the clincher -- the character Mike is just having a summer daydream about a world coming to peace once more and he is roused from his dream when his wife comes to him and says, ''Beirut just fell.'' The daydream is over, reality returns. And the overwhelming feeling of despair about the state of the world sets in again to the reader of this comic.
We are forced to ask ourselves when, if ever, will peace return to the world? When, if ever, will human beings fully realize their potential to make the world a wonderful place and overcome their propensity to wage war and havoc? Why can't we just live together?
Do you have daydreams like Mike? What are you feeling these days? Share with us.
