WRITER’S PROMPT: Writing on the Wall

Friday, April 15th, 2011

There was a wonderful piece in the March 2, 2011 Wall Street Journal (”Erasing Signatures From History” by Jeffrey Zaslow) which talks about a high school English teacher who encouraged his students to write their most creative thoughts on the walls of his classroom.  They covered ”those painted cinderblocks with original art, quotes from favorite books, and deep thoughts born from teenaged angst,” writes Zaslow.  And many of the students looked to those walls for inspiration.  I know I would have.

What a creative idea! A way of telling young people that their ideas and thoughts have value and should be shared by others.

I wonder what you might have wanted to write on the walls of your own classroom when you were a teenager.  Or, what you would like to write now.  For me, I think the most important words are, ”Persist. Never take ‘no’ for an answer.”  And,  ”Be kind, there is so much pain in the world, be kind!”

Please share your thoughts with us.

WRITER’S PROMPT: Writing Slogans On Your Body

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Robert X. Fogarty takes pictures of people who have written, usually on their bodies, a ”love note” to the world and then posts those pictures on his Facebook site, www.facebook.com/writeourfuture.     Two of the pictures published in a recent article in The Washington Post — http://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/viewer.aspx — show pictures of students who have written, ”If you’re going through hell keep going” and ”UNITED WE STAND AND DIVIDED WE FALL.”

If I were to write something on my body it might say, ”Never give up!” or Be kind to one another.”

What about you? If you were posing for such a picture showing writings on your own body, what would yours say?
