WRITER’S PROMPT: Whom Do You Trust?

Monday, July 27th, 2009

After famed newscaster Walter Cronkite died recently, some said the United States lost its most trusted figure — he was seen as a person who always told you the truth and whom you could depend on to help you understand all the difficult things that were going on in the world. He always tried to cut through deception when he reported the news.
That raises the question: Whom do you trust? Who is that person in your life or in the world whom you can always count on and believe in, a person who has integrity and honesty and who seems to care about things. We need to learn more about such fine people.
Please share with us your most trusted figure?

WRITER’S PROMPT: Looking At The World Through Someone Else’s Eyes

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Each of us looks at others and the events of life through our own eyes and point of view — that is part of the human, but mistaken notion that the world revolves around us when in reality each of us is just a small part of the total world.
Can you try, really try, to see things through the eyes of another person, and if you can, would your point of view change?
By example, I wake up in the morning and look forward to a good day, but I meet someone who has a sad face and is having a hard time with the same day I am experiencing. My immediate feeling may be that I don’t want this person and her problems to spoil my day. But what if I could take a breath and try harder to understand why she is feeling that way, to realize that we are all in the same world together, that this day another person may need my help, and that on another day I may need her help and her sensitivity to my needs.
How do we become less selfish and more compassionate? How do we take the grown-up step of looking at the world through someone else’s eyes and enrichen our self-centered point of view? How do we become our noble selves?
I’d welcome your thoughts

WRITER’S PROMPT: Creating Your Own Comic Strips

Monday, July 6th, 2009

When I was a child, the very best day of the week was Sunday mornings when my dad left home early to bring back an armload of newspapers, all with their glorious color comics sections. The funnies were my paradise – I’d spend the morning going over each strip, following the adventures of my favorite characters, even flying in the sky with them. I’d look at the dazzling illustrations, be drawn into their colorful worlds and be challenged to decipher the letters in the white balloons coming from the characters’ mouths or floating above their heads. And with help from my father, I’d try my best to sound out the words in the talk balloons and make sense of the stories they told.
I have never lost my love for comics, and have even created a web site — http://www.makebeliefscomix.com — where you can create your own comic strips online. The site offers you fun characters with different moods to choose from, blank talk and thought balloons to fill in and even printables on which you can write, draw and color.
If you want to have a good time today why don’t you go to MakeBeliefsComix.com and try out the site either on your own or with a friend or child. I promise you you’ll have fun.
Who are your favorite comic characters? Mine used to be Wonder Woman — she was so beautiful and I loved her special powers.
Please share your thoughts and your comics with me.

WRITER’S PROMPT: What Song Would You Sing Like A Bird?

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

I am thinking of birds today and the beautiful songs they sing. And I ask myself that if somehow their songs flew into my heart and soul, and I was able to make these beautiful sounds, too, when what songs would I sing? What would the sounds and words say? Would they bring beauty to the world, or pain, or joy, or sorrow, or peace.
What songs would you sing? Share with us.
