On this day, when the United States elected its first black President, Barack Obama, I stand in awe and amazement that my nation has come so far. Never in my lifetime did I ever expect to see a black American elected to this highest office.
I remember that August day in 1963 when I marched in Washington with the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and hundreds of thousands of others to advocate the enactment of civil rights legislation that would extend all freedoms to black Americans, and hearing Dr. King’s wonderful ”I Have a Dream…”’ speech in which one of the things he said was:
”I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
That day seems to have come with the new election, and my heart is so grateful for this. In many ways, we have overcome many of our deepest prejudices over the years, and we should take a moment to appreciate how far we have journeyed in our quest for freedom, for equality of all peoples, and for justice for all.
I am so proud to be a member of our nation.
Please share with me your feelings and hopes about the election results and where our nation may be headed.
