Why Should A Child Have to Beg for A Home?

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

‘’I just want to jump into their heart and stay there.’’ That’s what fifteen-year-old Jean says about his hope of finding a family who will adopt him. He is quoted in an article by Ellen Barry (‘’A Marketing Campaign From one Heart to Another’’, The New York Times, August 22) about an effort by a nonprofit group that works to find homes for foster children who are hard to place because of age or disability.
Jean and the other youngsters were being photographed by a professional photographer; their pictures are being displayed at the Queens Center mall in the hope that someone passing by would be moved to consider adopting them. Another boy, 14 year-old Rey, who has been placed in foster care at seven homes for 11 years, says, “I’ll do what I got to do to get a family.’’
Reading this story makes one’s heart ache.
Why should any young boy or girl have to beg for a family to love and care for them? Why shouldn’t any young boy or girl be loved and protected and nurtured? Don’t we owe that to every child born into the world? Why do we find it so hard to take care of our children? I don’t know the answers to these questions. Do you?
