What Are Your ‘Wonders’?

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

I read recently an article naming the new Seven Wonders of the World. Those chosen were: The Great Wall of China, Rome’s Colosseum, India’s Taj Mahal, Jordan’s Petra, Peru’s Machu Picchu, Brazil’s Statue of Christ Redeemer, and Mexico’s Chichen Itza pyramid.
I have had the good fortune to have visited some of these, and they are indeed great wonders attesting to humankind’s creativity and ability to build magnificent edifices.
But I wonder how these would stack up with some other wonders – if only we could achieve them. The wonder of ending all wars and conflict. Eradicating diseases throughout the world and providing universal health care. Or the wonder of our overcoming ourselves and reaching out to help others who need a gentle hand. Or the wonder of feeding people who walk around in hunger. The wonder of our being kind to one another, rather than closed to the pain of others. The wonder of our having taking good steps to protect our environment so that future generations can live safely. The wonder of our not having to work so hard to feed our families that we never have enough time or energy to spend with and enjoy family members and friends or find enough time to catch our breath and reflect on our lives and what makes life worth living.
What would happen if we stopped building monuments attesting to our civilization’s greatness and instead addressed many of the problems that make our lives such a struggle? Doing so would be the greatest ‘’Wonder’’ in my book. As I grow older I have come to realize that these magnificent edifices cannot make up for a safer, more peaceful and healthy world. If only we would learn to think differently and more creatively about our lives!
What are your own thoughts? What are your own ”wonders”?
