He Puts His Own Dollars to Work for Others

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

In the last 35 years, by working different part-time jobs and living very simply — no television or vocations, by living in a small apartment and driving an old car — Richard Semmler, 59, has donated as much as half of his annual income or more to charity. His goal is is to donate $1 million before he retires, and he estimates that he has given $770,000 so far. The money has gone to such groups as Habitat for Humanity, to evangelical Christian groups, to a homeless shelter and soup kitchen, covering 10,400 meals. Semmler comes from a modest family, the son of an electrician and secretary who couldn’t afford to send their son to college — he attended on scholarships. In a June 11, 2005 article about him in The Washington Post (Professor Finds Fulfillment In Emptying His Pockets) it said, ”Life isn’t always about multiplying what you get, he explained. Sometimes, it’s about subtraction.”
WRITE US: What do you think of how Semmler has decided to live his life. Is this something you think you could do? Is there something you could subtract from your own lifestyle to help others?

There would be space ships, and I’d have a jetpack and that’s how all the kids would get around. Jetpacks would be like the modern -time bike. Also, when ever there was a war between people, it would be like star wars, all kinds of creatures, weapons, new devices and a lot more. The best thing would be there is no crime. The countries would be represented as worlds. For example, Mars would be a country and so would Neptune. It would be the best dream ever.

Where Is Your Safe Haven?

Monday, June 6th, 2005

Everyone needs a safe place, or safe haven, they can go to when they need to catch their breath and find a few moments refuge from the stresses that come from outside or within. For me, such a place has always been the public library which I would retreat to as a boy to get away from the turmoil of an unhappy home. I was always happiest among the book shelves. Other times my safe haven has been my kitchen table where I write my books or read my beloved books. Sometimes, it is a quiet corner in a museum.
Share with us: Where do you find your safe havens — what places or people do you retreat to in search of peace and safety?

What Would You Say to ET?

Friday, June 3rd, 2005

I read a front-page piece in the May 30, 2005 Washington Post about a new giant telescope being developed by the SETI Institute that will be so powerful that it will be able to look at more stars in a year or two than we’ve have in the past 45 years. With its antennas, it hopes to pick up any messages that might be sent to us from extraterrestrial cultures. The thought of ET cultures sending us messages thrills me and makes me wonder who or what forms of life live in other parts of our universe. Are they friendly? Are they more intelligent than us? Can they help us or show us how to live in a more peaceful world that could be filled with love and caring and not war and hate.
And I wonder, if I had the power, what kind of messages would I want to send back to them? What about you? What kind of message would you send or do you think our country should be sending to the hundred billion galaxies in the universe. What should we signal? Write to me/bill
